Spray dried porcine plasma, imperative for piglet performance and health. Or not?

03 Nov 2020

Growing global awareness in regards to antimicrobial use in piglets is not only a huge opportunity for new innovative ingredients but as well as for certainties in life, such as spray dried porcine plasma or SDPP. Being on the market for longtime, SDPP regains interest after being put aside as a feed ingredient after the BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) crisis in the 1990s, hitting the livestock (ruminant) farming industry severely. Is this continuous hint of mistrust still relevant?

Improving feed efficiency and animal health through a new approach to TMR feeding

03 Aug 2020

Dairy cow rations are calculated to create a well-balanced diet. Yet, several phenomena can cause an ingested ration to differ considerably from the calculated ration. Changing feedstuffs’ characteristics due to silage management errors and environmental conditions lead to feedstuffs losing nutritional value. Loading errors lead to significant variations from the intended diet. Sorting is a third cause of ingested rations to differ considerably from calculated rations at an individual cow level. Sorting implies a selective intake of feed stuffs due to differences in taste, particle size and cows’ individual preferences. TMR (Total Mixed Rations) rations containing a variety of roughages and concentrates can create a range in particle size and taste leading to sorting, affecting feed efficiency and uniformity across a herd.

Managing sow weight maximizes lifetime performance

07 Jul 2020

Genetic evolution has led to a huge increase in performance resulting in 32 or more piglets weaned per sow per year. However the sow lifetime productivity (SLP), meaning the number of piglets a sow is delivering as soon she becomes breeding eligible until she leaves the herd, is often disappointing and highly variable in practice. To get a high SLP, all parameters of sow management are important among them also the sows’ body weight.
